Vineyard and vintage
Vounaina is a village built on rolling hills between the two great plains of Thessaly. At “16aria”, its highest point, we farm a vineyard planted in 1996 on sandy soil. The south-east exposure and the neighbouring hills shade the grapes from the afternoon sun preserving their acidity. 2024 was a hot, dry vintage, with lower yields, small berries and very high concentration.
Winemaking
A true field blend made with the traditional technique of co-fermentation: all varieties are picked by hand at different stages of ripeness and fermented together. The less ripe berries bring freshness and acidity while the riper ones bring volume and structure. After destemming comes a 96-hour cold maceration and fermentation in French oak Taransaud vats and stainless steel tanks, with a gentle daily pigeage for 2–3 weeks. The wine matures for 12 months in stainless steel tanks on its fine lees and is bottled unfiltered.
